The students in this age range move from manipulating whole numbers to understanding and using fractional numbers. Research has said that students' understanding of fractions and multiplication and division are predictors of their success in high school and beyond. It is important that we lay a foundation of these students and that they conceptually understand fractions before asking the students to abstractly use them.
Developmental Math Group has developed mats for fractions, decimals, place and value and telling time. With the suggested activities, the student will be able to develop an understanding with visual models rather than rote procedures.
